Elizabeth May (Floyd) South, 86 years young, of South Point, OH, transitioned to eternal life on August 15, 2017 at her home after a brief illness surrounded by her youngest daughter and son.
Born January 27, 1931 in Lawrence County, Ohio, she was the eldest child of the late Clyde and Nevada Ransbottom Floyd. Known as “Sis” to her siblings, “Aunt Sissy” to most of her nieces and nephews and “Libby” to many of her friends, she worked at F.W. Means Laundry in Huntington. After marrying and having children, she became a long-time employee of the late Dr. Salvador Diaz, as well as working in the housekeeping field for several families over the years.
Born in the early years of the Depression, she didn’t believe in waste. She was a master at taking “one man’s trash and turning it into another man’s treasure” and spent her time recycling and donating to several charities and shelters. You could always find her in the kitchen baking or cooking something for someone who had helped her in some way.
She was a Christian who currently attended First Southern Baptist Church in South Point and was a former member of Tri-State Baptist Temple where she worked many years in the Nursing Home Ministry with her late husband of 52 years, Robert “Bob” South, who preceded her in death in November 2004. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Juanita Childers and brother Carroll Floyd, plus many brothers and sisters in law.
Survivors include her daughters, Lu Ann South and Roberta M. South and her son, Charles R. South, all of South Point, Ohio; sister, Joan (Fred) Davis of Scottown, OH; brothers, Buck Floyd of Huntington, WV, Arnold Floyd of Proctorville and Johnny (Mary) Floyd of Chesapeake, OH; sister-in-law’s Eleanor Floyd and Veronica Floyd, both of Proctorville, OH, Loretta South of Catlettsburg, KY, Dorothy South of Columbus, OH and Jimilea (Ron) Guthiel of Powell, OH; brother-in-law’s Ronnie Childers of South Point and Alan (Margaret) South of Randleman, NC; numerous nieces and nephews; wonderful lifelong neighbors, the Moon’s, the Kearns and the Lester’s; and good friends Janice Diaz of Scarbo, WV and Audrey Murdock of South Point, OH.
Special thanks to Hospice of Huntington, especially Social Worker Christine Smith, and RN’s Amy Zopp, Becki Harless, Rhonda Layne and Tim Beach for their wonderful support and care; to her neighbor, Dave Curry, for all his assistance over the years, especially in her last days; and to the Rick, Bill and the staff of Slack and Wallace Funeral home for their support and services.
Homegoing services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point, Ohio with Pastor Paul Michael Booth officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point, Ohio. Family and friends may call from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 18th and from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. the day of the service.
