Charlene Kathryn Eakin Walls, 69, of South Point, OH passed away peacefully at 5:55 pm Thursday, April 3, 2014 at the Emogene Dolen Jones Hospice House in Huntington, WV. Charlene was born June 23, 1944 in Grove City, PA, the second daughter of the late Kenneth Raymond Eakin, Sr. and Jean Louise Williamson Eakin. Although she lost a hard-fought battle with liver & kidney disease, she spent her last days viewing the river she loved so much, surrounded by many family members and friends celebrating her life. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Roy Hannick.
Charlene is survived by her daughter & son-in-law, Kenna Jean & Billy McCallister, her 3 grandchildren: Makenlee Kathryn, Maleah Karolyn & Kaleb Michael McCallister, a God-daughter, Rhonda (Brian) Hess & children, and a step-granddaughter she loved as her own, Marissa Walls. Also, 3 sisters: Carolyn Hannick, Sinetta (Dean) Maul, Diana (Rich) McKnight; 1 brother: Kenneth “Ray” (Judy) Eakin, Jr.; 8 nieces: Nikki (Eddie), Heather (Todd), Angela (Larry), Kimberly (Michael), Jocelyn, Colleen, Debbie (Charlie) & Dana; 1 nephew: Kenny (Whitney); 5 great-nieces: Becca, Dani, Taylor, Lillie & Dehlia; and 1 great-nephew: Tommy.
After spending her childhood days moving from Grove City, PA, to Dayton, OH & Charleston, WV, Charlene landed in Huntington, WV for much of her young adulthood and settled across the river in South Point, OH. She was a self-employed beautician for over 45 years, beloved by her clients, young & old. From teaching a toddler that hair clippers are not scary to making a customer “beautiful” one last time, Charlene was admired for her work, and she quickly became friends with each person that sat in her chair. Over the years, Charlene gained numerous friends who held a special place in her heart. These friends include (but are not limited to): the late Dave Hazlett & Kay, the late Don Savage, Julie & DR, Anne Blake, Shirley Fortner, her longtime business partner and friend Darlene Spears & family, Amy & Phil Henson, as well as her high school best friend Pam Peoples Stout.
Charlene was loved by all who knew her no matter the time or distance apart.
Visitation will be April 12th, 2014 from 3-5 pm at Slack & Wallace Funeral Home, South Point, followed by a memorial service at 5 pm. Please come bearing your favorite memory of Charlene. Condolences may also be expressed at www.slackandwallace.com.
