Gates Ellery Callens, 62, of Chesapeake, OH died Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington, WV. He was born January 13, 1952 in Huntington, WV, a son of Rosetta Garret Callens of Huntington and the late James Callens. In addition to his father, Gates was preceded in death by a daughter, Stephanie A. Callens. He was an Air Force veteran; a member of the Rock of Grace Church; and he also enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting and singing. Survivors include his mother; his wife, Ida M. Bates Callens; 3 grandsons, JaSean M. Clayborn, Dimitri C. G. Callens and Jmeil T. Cochran; several cousins; and friends, James “Breeze” Hale and Don Hussell. Funeral services will be at 12:00 Noon Friday, October 17, 2014 at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point, OH with Donald Hussell officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery, Huntington. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Friday. Slack and Wallace Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
